Around 200 hectares of bleached corals around Côn Đảo Island have recovered naturally, the management of the Côn Đảo National Park said on Wednesday.
In May some 400 hectares of corals, or around a fifth of the reefs around the island, were bleached white and died because of the sea’s unusually warm temperature due to El Nino.
Coral reefs have an important role to play in the marine ecosystem by preserving the environment, enabling biodiversity and preventing erosion.
The park management has instituted a project to resurrect the bleached corals, which is expected to begin early next year. — VNS
