Domestic tourists, including those buying domestic and outbound tours, have generated much bigger revenues for travel firms than those earned from the inbound tourism segment, according to leading travel firms in HCM City.

This is an interesting fact as international tourists have always been considered as the key revenue source accounting for a large proportion of revenues of travel firms offering tourism services in all the three segments.

The Daily complied statistics about revenues and numbers of tourists of HCMC’s top travel firms in the inbound, outbound and domestic segments. Such firms have recently been honored as HCMC’s leading travel firms 2012 by the HCMC Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Statistics about revenues earned last year by Saigontourist Travel Service, Vietravel and Fiditourist – the three firms included in the list of leading travel firms in the three segments - have somehow reflected the revenue growth earned from the domestic segment.

Saigontourist earned VND1.733,4 trillion, with the outbound and domestic segments accounting for up to VND1.326,6 trillion, while the inbound segment catering to international tourists generated the remainder that is much smaller.

For Vietravel, the inbound segment generated VND99.5 billion last year while the outbound segment brought in huge revenues of VND1.781.8 trillion, and VND473.6 billion was recorded in the domestic segment.

Meanwhile, Fiditourist earned total revenues of VND390.2 billion, with the inbound segment accounting for VND61.3 billion and the outbound and domestic segments accounting for VND328.9 billion.

The outbound and domestic segments contributed greatly to HCMC’s tourism revenues last year with VND5.244,6 trillion among the total revenue amount of VND7.877,8 trillion.

HCMC’s ten leading travel firms offering inbound services welcomed 633,000 international tourists last year and earned VND2.633 trillion in revenues.

The outbound segment is often seen to generate lower profits for travel firms as most of the money paid by customers are then paid for overseas service providers. However, this segment still brought in an enormous revenue amount last year with VND3.661 trillion with over 280,000 domestic tourists buying outbound tours.

Besides, the top ten travel firms in HCMC obtained VND1.583 trillion from the domestic segment with 727,800 tourists.
