A mixture of meandering back-roads and freshly-sealed highways lead through three provinces: Cao Bang, Lang Son and Bac Kan; all of which are among the most sparsely populated in the country. Vietnam’s ethnic minorities are actually in the majority here, and their fascinating cultures and ways of life dominate the area. The scenery is pastoral and peaceful, but limestone karsts are a constant and dramatic presence on this loop. China looms large to the north; at times literally a stone’s throw away.
