The Kuala Lumpur Tower International Jump saw skydivers from 22 countries leap off the KL Tower in the Malaysian capital in one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures on the Base jumping calendar.
Despite these jumpers’ andrenaline rush, this year’s event was overshadowed by the death of 42-year-old Australian Kylie Tanti, who was killed last week while practising for the event.
During her third jump at the Alor Setar Tower, also in Malaysia, her parachute got tangled in a camera on her safety helmet and she fell 165m (550ft) to her death.
The KL Tower stands at 421m (1,380ft), the sixth tallest telecoms tower in the world.
‘Base’ jumping refers to the four objects jumped off – buildings, antennas, spans (bridges) and Earth (mountains and cliffs).
In January, Nasr Al Niyadi and Omar Al Hegelan leapt from the 828m (2,716ft) Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world’s tallest building.
