An Giang province is declared the largest Maitreya Buddha statue in Asia.

The Maitreya Buddha statue atop Cam Mountain in southern An Giang province, which is 33.60 metres high, is now recognised as the largest Maitreya Buddha statue in Asia.

Concurrently, a statue featuring Buddha entering nirvana on Ta Cu Mountain at the Linh Son Truong Tho Temple in central Binh Thuan province has been recognised as the longest Buddha statue on a mountain top.

The reclining Buddha is 49 metres long, representing 49 years since Lord Buddha’s awakening until his passing.

Representatives of the Asia Book of Records plan to visit the sites and award the certificates in April.

Earlier in 2006, these two mountaintop Buddha statues were included in the Vietnam Book of Records for their giant sizes.

It is expected that the establishment of these two statues as Asian records will have a dramatic effect on and improve the local tourism industry.
